Young REP Summer Conservatory

The Young Repertory Theatre Training Program celebrated its 51st year in 2024 and continues to train and develop students interested in the theatre arts as a vocation or serious avocation. Our program offers Morning Actor Training, as well as optional Performance Workshops for Musical Theatre and Acting in the afternoon. Students may participate in one, some, or all of our programs!

The 2025 program begins the week of June 9 and concludes the week of July 21 with our student showcases. During this six-week intensive training period, students aged 12-20, will learn from an outstanding instruction team of theatre professionals including Directors, Actors, Coaches, Choreographers, Designers, Technicians, and Playwrights.

Well-known as a professional training ground, Young REP teaches the discipline, concentration and skill necessary to all areas of theatre. Students will have the opportunity to explore and grow as individuals and ensemble performers. Class exercises and projects will focus on the assessment and effective use of the actor’s basic skills in voice, movement and characterization.

Actor Training Program (M-F 9:30am-noon)

Throughout the six-week intensive training program, students meet Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to noon in intimate classes of 10-18 students.

Acting Classes
Actor training is taught by working professionals who are also talented, qualified teachers. Work from these classes is presented one evening at the Lesher Center for the Arts at the end of the six-week period.

Two Elective Classes
Each student may choose two electives in addition to their core classes. Recent elective classes have included: voice and speech, physical theatre, clowning, puppetry, improvisation, Commedia dell'Arte, Shakespeare, directing, audition technique, movement, playwriting, and musical theatre.

Master Classes
Once each week students participate in a Master Class on different topics. Recent master classes have included: stage combat and swordplay, dance, an audition with Center REP's casting director, theatre make-up, stage management, voice-over, theatre history, and panel discussions with theatre professionals.

Musical Theatre Performance Workshop (M/W/F 1-4pm)

To complement our morning training program, Young REP offers challenging afternoon/evening training to experienced students, culminating in fully staged performances at the Lesher Center for the Arts. Auditions for these performance workshops are by invitation following the initial interview/audition for the Young REP Theatre Workshop.

Musical Theatre Performance Workshop: A six-week intensive performance based workshop in which students master a variety of vocal, dance, and acting styles focusing on selections from both the classic and contemporary musical theatre repertoire, culminating in performances at the end of the session.

Actor's Performance Workshop (T/Th 1-4pm)

Actor's Performance Workshop Actors will explore and perform a challenging piece of theatre by a significant playwright as well as create original work.

Auditions:

Admission is based on an application and audition/interview process.
Auditions for the 2024 program took place from March - May 2024.
Audition/interview requires a memorized monologue, 1-2 minutes in length from a published play reflecting careful preparation, imagination and honesty.
If the student is interested in the Musical Theatre program, please be prepared to sing 16 bars of anything a capella.
Auditions are held at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek, CA.
